Susan R. Says:
Are there any assisted living or long-term care facilities in Panama?
IL Panama Editor Jessica Ramesch Says:
Hi Susan,
In Canada and the US, “elder care” typically includes a range of options for seniors, including assisted living, healthcare, and hospice, often in live-in facilities. That generally hasn’t been the case in Panama, where families tend to care for their loved ones at home. Hiring in-home help is affordable, so it’s relatively easy to keep a close eye on family members. In a culture where extended families often live together, it makes sense that this has been the preference.
If you’re looking for in-home care in Panama, the expat grapevine can help you with recommendations. Your chosen community will likely have one or more groups on Facebook or even Whatsapp. (Search your town’s name along with the word “expats” to find and join groups. For example, by searching “Coronado Expats” I found several groups that have been wonderful resources for me in my new hometown).
I hope to see more upscale live-in facilities come online in the future, as this is a growing niche with more and more retirees setting their sights on Panama. In Panama City, Dr. Debbie Wong (who has spoken and multiple IL conferences in Panama) is a partner at Wonder Years.
Wonder Years is a residence, clubhouse, and rehabilitation center for seniors. It offers temporary and permanent residence.
You can talk to Dr. Wong in person if you’ll be joining us for our Fast Track Panama Conference in Panama City this coming February 16-18.
