Owen P. Says:
I’m thinking of moving my family to Playa del Carmen. Are there good international schools there where my son could study in English?
IL Mexico Correspondent Bel Woodhouse Says:
Hi Owen,
Playa del Carmen is easily the fastest-growing city in Mexico. And, as you would expect with such a city on the up, it caters nicely to international crowds.
Mexicans take the education of their children seriously and nowadays even most public schools will teach students English.
You can find several international schools in Playa that are English-speaking or bilingual. Actually, there are quite a few options to choose from, so you can be sure to find something to suit your family’s education needs.
Expat kids who go to many of these schools can take English-language placement exams when they reach college age. But if you’re concerned about accreditation in general, there are options for this, as well. The International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) is a global education community, and it’s worth looking into its programs and locations.
Playa del Carmen has an expat Facebook Group, Expats in Playa Del Carmen with over 35,000 members which I recommend you join. Ask questions about education because you will be able to get real answers from other expats living there who have their children enrolled in schools.
Local website All About Playa also has a breakdown on the city’s international schools in this article. It also covers homeschooling if that is something that you’re interested in.
