All beaches in Belize are open to the public, and considered national land or “Queen’s Land” for the first 66 feet from the high-water level. All docks are also open from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. regardless of who built them. This gives all segments of the community the feeling of inclusiveness and provides the freedom to roam the ocean’s edge from one end of the island to the other.
Eileen Jamison has spent 20 years living on Ambergris Caye in Belize. She is from a small city in northwest Pennsylvania where she worked as a pharmacy technician and inventory manager. She and her husband, Dan, loved to travel and shared a dream of living on an island. They visited islands from the Eastern Caribbean to the Pacific, then looked to Belize in the Western Caribbean.
We began our search for a new kind of life in Costa Rica, Mexico, and Guatemala. However, when we thought about where we really wanted to live, we kept returning to the idea of making a home in Belize.
I learned that in Belize “fresh” actually means “this just came out of the ground this morning.” The first time I ate fresh carrots in Belize, I could not believe how good they tasted.
My husband, Marcos, and I moved to the island of Ambergris Caye, Belize four years ago with considerable knowledge of the country since we had made 12 trips here and were able to watch the country grow and change.
