Sometimes life takes you in a direction that you could never have anticipated. This proved to be true for Cathy Carrolan Mata, when she decided to uproot and move to Costa Rica in 2003.
When Sheelagh Richards’ husband, John, took an early retirement in 2004, she decided to do the same. Spending her career in health and social care, she was ready for something new. “I was working crazy hours,” she says. “After 36 years non-stop, I also decided to retire early. With no children or parents to care for, we were free agents.”
A little over a year ago, Canadian Kathy Wayland, along with her husband Tony, moved from California to the small town of Platanillo, close to the Pacific coast of Costa Rica.
“How can two people who have lived their entire lives in Colorado, move so far away?” That was the reaction from family and friends when my husband, Wes, and I announced our decision to retire overseas. We felt it was a good time for us to have a new adventure. I’d been working for over 30 years as a library employee and Wes had been retired for over a year and was growing weary of the cold Colorado weather. We were in good health and we had worked hard and raised our family when our peers were out exploring (we married young).
