Bocas del Toro—Bohemian Caribbean for a Fraction the Cost

International Living Panama Editor Jessica Ramesch fell in love with the Caribbean archipelago of Bocas del Toro way back in the 1990s—with its beautiful beaches, turquoise waters, and slow pace of life… Back then, the area was virtually unheard of among expats—and even among Panamanians, few had visited.

So, how has it changed in the years she’s been visiting—or has it changed? On a recent trip for IL, Jessica looked into the cost of living, efforts to preserve the environment, and more…

She tells Dan Prescher all about her discoveries in your latest exclusive Editor’s Debrief.

2. To get here from Panama City, you can drive to the launch point at Almirante and catch a small ferry from there to Bocas Town—it's a very pretty drive. You get to cross the Continental Divide and see the vast Fortuna Dam (a great place to stop and take photos). Just keep in mind that it's a long trip…it usually takes seven or eight hours from Panama City. If you're pressed for time (or simply prefer not to drive or take buses), then you can fly an hour from Panama City via Air Panama. If you are traveling from the Chiriquí province, unfortunately, there are currently no flights from David to Bocas—but the four-hour drive is packed with gorgeous sights. © Jessica Ramesch/IL
