We’re exploring options for retiring abroad, and want to learn more about Uruguay.
I have a lot of food allergies (including dairy, gluten, and corn); is it possible to purchase alternative products in Uruguay, or would it be a challenging proposition?
IL Executive Editor Jennifer Stevens Says:
Hi Emilie,
While the selection of foods and goods available in Uruguay is growing, you don’t find the staggering variety of foods you do in U.S. stores. So you might find it more challenging to get alternative products in regular stores, depending on their size and location.
Having said that, there are certainly options—especially in the capital city, Montevideo.
Gluten free bakery Gluteno is a favorite among expats and visitors. Not only does it offer a wide selection of gluten-free baked goods, but it’s nice and close to the beach for those seaside days.
You can see from this list that Montevideo has a wide variety of other gluten-free dining options.
As for dairy-free options, things might be a little trickier. Uruguay loves its cows, and all products coming from them.
But never fear! You can order dairy alternatives for delivery in Uruguay at this link, even if you struggle to find them on shelves.
You can also find plenty of traditional Uruguayan delicacies that are dairy, gluten, and corn-free. These tend to be widely available, so you shouldn’t find it too challenging to meet your dietary requirements.
