Richard L. Says:
I’m planning to go to Portugal in early April 2024. I’m going to be 81 at the time. I’ve heard this could cause issues with renting a car. Is that true?
IL Executive Editor Jennifer Stevens Says:
Hi Richard,
Renting a car is a great way to get around Portugal, The freedom it gives you will allow you to visit many possible locations for your overseas retirement.
It’s true that some providers have a maximum age for renters. It depends on the company but can start as low as 70 years of age. Be sure to check with the company to confirm your eligibility and ensure there are no surprises once you arrive.
All the major rental car companies like Hertz and Avis operate in Portugal, but why not look into a company like Europcar to find a cheaper rate? One website that will search all the car rental companies for you is Auto Europe.
There are several long-term car hire options available if you want to come and explore for more than a few weeks. Check with Avis and Europcar for their long-term arrangements.
Remember to request a vehicle with automatic instead of standard transmission (the more common type in Europe) if you are not familiar with using a stick shift. There’s no need to add that complication to your trip.
Save your energy instead for discovering a cozy restaurant in a tiny aldeia or a windswept castle on a mountaintop.
Best of luck with your trip to Portugal! And remember, you can pick up our pre-planned itineraries and travel guide here to make your journey even smoother.
