Joel C. Says:
Can I use my U.S. driver’s license if I move to Spain?
IL Executive Editor Jennifer Stevens Says:
Hi Joel,
Once you become a resident of Spain, you can use your U.S. or Canadian driver’s license for six months, then you must get a Spanish driver’s license.
You must take lessons through a recognized driving school, no matter how much driving experience you have. You will then be required to pass a written theory test and a practical driving test in a car with a manual transmission (automatic transmissions are rare in Spain).
You can take the written test in English or Spanish.
Some areas of Spain have English-speaking examiners for the driving test, but more commonly you’ll need to do the test in Spanish.
You must also get a certificate of mental and physical fitness from Centro de Reconocimiento de Conductores Autorizados. The whole process can cost between €500 and €1,000 ($532 to ($1,065).
While all of this might sound off-putting, it’s worth noting that Spain’s cities have convenient public transportation that allows you to live without needing a car.
Don’t forget to pick up a copy of our guidebook, Escape to Spain, while planning your move. It has detailed information and advice on every aspect of living in Spain.
