Can You Bring Dogs to Belize?

Dusty L. Says:

Can you bring dogs into Belize and what are the restrictions?

IL Belize Correspondent Shane Kenny Says:

Hi Dusty,

Yes, you can bring dogs into Belize. People do it all the time!

Belize isn’t a long flight from most U.S. cities, and the paperwork isn’t too complex.

Dogs don’t have to undergo quarantine when they enter Belize. But you should get your vet in the U.S. to fill out and sign a health certificate, such as the APHIS 7001 International Health Certificate from the United States Department of Agriculture, stating that your pet is in good health. This must be done not more than 14 days before departure.

Your dogs will need to have a rabies vaccination administered between 30 days and six months before departure.

You’ll also need a valid import permit from the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA). You can also request a pet passport from BAHA; it costs $100 a year, is renewable each year, and negates the need for an APHIS form.

I should note that there have been reports of inconsistencies regarding these requirements with BAHA at Belize International Airport, and they can be subject to change.

To be safe, I’d recommend you contact the Placencia Humane Society, as they’ll be able to give you the latest information regarding documentation, shots, and the overall process.
