You'll have heard me say in previous monthly notes that Ecuador's four-day/three-night Tren Crucero excursion through the Andes is on my bucket list. The luxury train (dining cars, sofa seating, and more) travels from Quito to Guayaquil (or vice versa). Evenings are spent bedded down in historic haciendas along the way.
Among Ecuador's many charms are its old haciendas, scattered throughout the highlands. Built by the Spanish landowners of days past, many of these grand old structures remain today. Though some are still strictly family residences, many have been converted into hotels and restaurants and are open to the public. And undoubtedly each one of them has its own flair and history.
One of the benefits of being an over-65 resident of Ecuador is discounted airfares. You may have wondered, "So how much savings are we really talking about?" As a member of Tercera Edad ("Third Age" in Spanish), I want to share with you an example of tickets I just purchased, plus a great time-saving insider tip.
My wife and I have just returned to Cuenca from a three-month visit to the U.S. Our journey began with IL's Fast-Track conference in Las Vegas back in October and the rest of the time was spent with our family in North Carolina and New Jersey. What a joy it was to be with our kids and grandkids for so long, and especially to welcome our new granddaughter into the family in late November.

Many expats first come to Ecuador as tourists. They visit, decide if they like it here (what's not to like...stunning scenery, the good life for less, amazing beaches...the list is endless), and then think about maybe coming to test drive life here. A great idea, we say. But what if you'd like to stay longer than just the three months a tourist visa offers but aren't yet ready to go down the route of obtaining residence here? In this month's Ecuador Insider news, Wendy DeChambeau answers that question. She'll tell you how you can enjoy all this beautiful country has to offer for up to nine months without having to apply for a residence visa. You'll find her insights below.
Living in Ecuador is good for your health. It's true...the food is fresh, the climate is perfect, and the living is easy (no stress here). If you're someone who likes to stay active and fit, then Ecuador is certainly the place for you. It may be stating the obvious, but Ecuador is beautiful. Its natural beauty is one of the many reasons expats and tourists alike fall in love with the country. From the white-sand beaches of the coast to the towering volcanoes in the highlands, there is so much to admire no matter how long your stay.
