Arnold W. Says:
Do I need international health insurance in Italy?
IL Executive Editor Jennifer Stevens Says:
Hi Arnold,
If you’re not a member of the National Health Plan, you’ll need comprehensive health insurance. In any event, you must have a private policy to obtain most types of visa.
Even if you’re eligible for the Italian National Health Plan (Servizio Sanitario Nazionale, SSN), it will take a while for it to come through, so you’ll need to be covered in the interim.
BUPA International is a major name in expat health insurance. You can get quotes and rates on its website.
A U.K.-based international insurance provider is Aetna International. Like most providers, you can get a quote online on its website.
Since coverage and premiums vary significantly from one provider to the next, it’s best to shop around to find the right level of coverage at the right price for you.
With most insurance companies, the maximum age for applicants is 64 years, with a few insurance providers allowing enrollment up to the age of 74.
