Do you Have Any Advice for Golf in Belize?

Ron D. Says:

My wife and I are interested in spending winters in Belize. We are golfers and not interested in staying in an elaborate resort. Any advice?

IL Belize Correspondent Shane Kenny Says:

Hi Ron,

That’s a good—and popular—plan. Here where I live in Placencia we have a decent amount of snowbirds. They start to arrive between Thanksgiving and the start of the New Year and leave around the end of April. Most arrange a rental to stay in for the four to five months they’re here.

I’d advise anyone that plans to snowbird here to take a short trip well ahead of time to locate and reserve your rental as they tend to fill up. Many snowbirds book their rental for next year while they’re here this year.

As far as golf goes, the best-known course is in Belmopan—the capital city of Belize. It’s called Roaring River and is a 9-hole, narrow course with two tee boxes on each hole to make up the 18 holes.

There is also a 9-hole course in Consejo Shores, a community in the northern Corozal District of the country.

There have been rumors of a golf course being built near Placencia for years. The latest is that the clubhouse and driving range are nearing completion and will open soon. I’m taking a I’ll-believe-it-when-I-see-it approach with little expectation I will ever see it.

All in all, while Belize doesn’t have a huge golfing scene for you and your wife, it’s still a popular and beautiful place to spend your winters.

Plus, if you spend your time in Placencia, you’ll certainly avoid any elaborate resorts—the vibe here is much more relaxed and welcoming.
