I’m considering a mid January to mid March getaway from Madison Wi. (Explanation not needed ! ) I’m a healthy 68 retired guy. Thinking of a month in Guanacaste and a month in Central Valley to see if this should be an annual thing or permanent move. Any details from start to finish IE: fly into car needs towns great expat connects etc. extremely welcome. Thanks in advance. Bob

    How exciting!
I think it is a great idea to check out beach and Central Valley life.

I put together this list of contacts I have made on editorial trips… I hope you find it helpful.

I suggest looking into flying to Liberia and then out of San Jose.

Do you speak Spanish. The Central Valley is very doable by bus, yet speaking Spanish would make that easier to figure out the system once you are there. That expat group in Grecia in the document is a great resource for that area.

I live in Villarreal, just 2 miles from Playa Tamarindo so let me know if you end up in the area.

just got a quote for renting a car for two months from Adobe. I was shocked at the cost. Is there a less expensive alternative to $3500 for two months? That is a deal killer. One Airbnb is in San Ramon. The second is a ways outside of Cartago.

Good morning Bekah. Hope all is well!
Plans are finalized. I’ll be staying near Grecia for the 2 months starting Mid January. Made connections through your link which really helped put it all together. When I venture your way maybe we’ll be able to get together. Thanks again, Bob

I like how you are staying in San Ramon and outside of Cartago to get a feel for both sies of San Jose.

Have you checked other online options? I like to use Booking and find it cheaper. (I just found an SUV for $2,500 and an economy car for $1,900 but not sure what insurance is included in that.) Jan to March is high season and the most expensive time. Once Easter passes, prices drop for rentals. Do you need a car for the entire time? For example, when you are in Atenas and Grecia, many people get around via bus and walking when in those towns.

Uber is easy to use in Costa Rica in the Central Valley so that might be a cheaper option to not have to rent a car for the entire 2 months. What do you think?

I also know this woman Chantel who does rentals… maybe you can get a better price from her.
