I am planning to fly to Ecuador, obtain a Tourist visa, and bring extra baggage to stay some months, as allowed by my airline and paid extra per bag fee to my airline.  I am now being told that the EC Government website says that EC customs in Quito airport can charge me an additional baggage fee of up to $200 for each bag over 2 bags.  This is completely separate from what I pay the airline.  Plus any duty that applies.  So if I brought 2 “allowed” bags, plus 3 extra bags I would pay the airline their stated fee for each of the 3 extra bags, plus pay EC an additional $600?  Is this true?  Is this policy a current practice?  What can you tell me about it?  Thanks for any help you can give, to avoid this huge surprise upon arrival!

Angela, I’ve also heard that information bantered about but I don’t know anyone who has ever been charged those fees. Let’s see if Edd has any experience here. Also, please send a link to the website you reference so we can see this info?

    Thanks, Suzan

I know nothing of this. My wife and I always try to tailor our packing to the max allowed by whichever airline we’re using.

Angela, if you do take the extra bags, can you let us know how that works out? My husband and I are debating doing the same thing. Many thanks!
