    Hi Experts,

Our condo is finished and now we will visit and be buying appliances and furniture. Apparently there are artisans in nearby Bahia who make quality furniture and come highly recommended. The question is, how to we get our big chunk of money for these purchases from here to Ecuador? These individuals don’t take credit cards. Would you suggest daily withdrawals from ATM’s until enough cash is stock-piled? I am guessing any store selling appliances would take credit cards.

If your money is held in a U.S. bank then the easiest way to get your hands on that cash while in Ecuador is through the use of an ATM. Most banks allow you to withdraw $500/day, though you should check with your bank to verify the limit. Sometimes the bank will allow $500/day per person not account, so you and your husband could potentially jointly withdraw $1000 each day.

Most appliance stores will take major credit cards. Just be sure to ask them for the “cash” price because that can be much lower than what is advertised. The advertised price often assumes you’ll be making monthly payments to the store and is therefore inflated.

Definitely paying cash is the way to go – the discounts are huge!!!! And yes, the best way is to just withdraw from ATMs over a period of time to gather the funds you need. That’s how we all do it in Cuenca, too.
