I heard on my local NPR program this morning that Ecuador is among a few South American countries that call the planet we live on “Mother Earth”. They have a wonderful pro-environmental policy, even going so far as to decide not to exploit a national forest area where huge deposits of oil have been found. This is the kind of country I want to live in. Could you tell me more about the governments policies to prevent more harm to our environment.
Hi Gillian, when Ecuador rewrote its constitution a few years ago, they actually gave civil (maybe not the correct term) rights to the environment. At least one lawsuit here in Ecuador on behalf of ‘nature’ has been won because of this. it’s an unusual posture, but one we find commendable. I’ll see if I can find more info to post here. Viva Ecuador.
