    Hello again,

I will be 64 on Sept 20, 2013. I do not see my wife and I being about to move to Ecuador before I turn 65 next year. Could I purchase a healthcare policy there even though I didn’t live there yet and pay on it just as if I lived there so that I could get in on it before I passed 65? I’m in great health and don’t even take any prescription meds. My wife is 45 so she shouldn’t have any problem. We would be having to live on about $2800/month (my social security, small pension payment), and a big portion of our savings would have to go toward buying a house/land).

Our biggest worry, with my wife being so much younger than I, is that she would give up her career to follow me there and everything would be great as long as I live (and SS keeps flowing), but when I die, she would be left stranded there in Ecuador with no career. She is Ukrainian. This is our biggest dilemma.

    Thanks, Steve

Hi Stephen, I do not think you can buy health insurance in Ecuador unless you have a resident visa. There may be some health insurance providers, though, who will now you to apply to their systems up through age 70. You might want to contact a health insurance specialist here in Ecuador to learn more. One is Olga: olga.terneus@prodeseg.com. And/or, contact Sarah Dettman who may be able to put you in contact with additional resources: s.dettman@yahoo.com.
