We have just learned that outside the U.S. different types of credit cards are used. Apparently there is no magnetic strip, but an embedded “chip” instead, which provides greater security.

Do you experts and expats use these “chip” type credit cards rather than the U.S. “strip” kind? I know Suzan has talked about Capitol One, so is that what they use?

I mentioned awhile back that my husband was unable to use any of his major credit cards even in the big stores in Quito, which mystified the experts….(and they were B of A and Wells Fargo…)

I’m mystified by everything you’ve written, Gretchen. I was just in Quito a week ago for the IL conference and paid my bill at the hotel with my US credit card without problem. I have two Ecuadorian debit cards (getting my 1st credit card this week) and they both have magnetic strips on the back just like my US ones.

My cards are regular old credit cards, too. I have an American Express platinum card (which I find well worth its stiff annual fee) and a Capital One visa card. I’ve never had a problem using these overseas. I have had some issues with my ATM card not being accepted by some banks/machines but I think that’s a network issue more than anything. One place to compare and contrast the features of various cards is http://www.creditcards.com.
