We are planning a month long trip to Ecuador in February and are presently looking for accommodations in 3 different cities. We are looking at booking some accommodation through a website called http://www.airbnb.com They have some interesting privately owned properties listed for short term rentals in Quito, Cuenca and Salinas. Does anyone have any experience with Airbnb? Also, do you have any recommendations for hotels or hostels in Cuenca and Salinas? I noticed Suzan recommended one in Quito, Hotel Andino. Thanks

Scroll down on the left to the travel itinerary section and click on the links there and you’ll find some recommendations for hostels, etc. I’ve not used airbnb but I have used vrbo.com many times to rent apartments in Quito. I’ll find links to the apartments/homes we have rented and post them here…

In Salinas we enjoyed Francisco II (no breakfast but grocery store a block away has great ham & cheese croissants). In Cuenca we stayed at Casa las Barrancas. Kookaburra has 2 VERY small studios – owner from Alberta, Canada.

Ed, as far as our budget goes, we’re presently looking at renting an apartment for 10 nights, in a modern apartment building which is about 6 blocks from El Centro. The cost for this is about $450. We haven’t booked it yet though. Do you have any suggestions that are in this price range or better? Thanks, Colleen.November 14, 2012 at 11:25 am #493580DIANE OUTERBRIDGEParticipantEd, we’ll keep you in mind for returning to Cuenca. Right now, we’re planning on returning to Quito in March or April to finalize plans on a small home we’re building in Pakakuna Gardens. We loved Cuenca when we were there in May/June 2012 and will return to visit…but home will be Checa (outside of Quito). Thanks.
