Renting a car

I will be exploring the southern coastal towns, flying into Guayaquil and starting in Salinas working my way up the coast to Manta.
Would it be better to rent a car for a week or just take public transport to end up in Manta then back to Guayaquil?

I always prefer to have my own car, but totally depends on you…
