My wife is very concerned about security, and has heard of ‘wealthy’ Americans being kidnapped for ransom in Central/South America. Is this a problem in Ecuador? We’re not ‘wealthy’, but in some areas being an expat American might make us a target?

Tell your wife to relax. Kidnappings are not a problem in Ecuador for any nationality.
