I am thinking about small items one could buy at WalMarts in the U.S.,but are hard to find in Ecuador: items that are not necessary but make life more enjoyable

Bring anything you can that will make your life more enjoyable. Why take a chance on not being able to find such items in Ecuador, or discovering that what you’re looking for is of lower quality (and higher prices)?

These days, almost everything we want can be found in Ecuador… although not always of the quality and low-price as you’ll find in the States. If you’re bringing a container, I’d throw some small appliances (crockpot, juicer, food processor, etc in) but if you’re bringing them in your luggage, I don’t think I’d bother.

Some items we found lacking that we brought to Ecuador:
Himalayan Salt, or “Real Salt” (our little safe is full of salt!)
A hand-held hair dryer (much cheaper here)
    English-language books
    Sheets (higher thread count here)
    Kitchen knives with a block
    Graphite lubricant for rusty locks
Stainless steel screws and stainless padlock to prevent rusting
English DVD movies and a U.S. DVD player
    Lots of music CD’s
    Any consumer electronics you need

We put all these in a large cooler with wheels which we left there.
Hope to eventually bring pillow-top mattress covers too…
And our juicer and sauerkraut crock…

I know everyone’s list will be different, but this is what we found.
I will be stocking up on bathing suits too to make sure I can have my size!

Just a note: most DVDs in Ecuador come with an English option… at least I have not bought any that don’t. And you’ll want a local DVD player to play those. Most music can be streamed online these days via commercial-free internet radio… or bring your iPod — it will take up far less room than CDs. And while I love real books, I have been reading lately on my Kindle… makes travel much easier.
