I just received a letter from Social Security stating my income for 2014. It has my home U.S. address and is addressed to my first name, middle initial and last name. Is this sufficient for proof of income or do I need a special letter from Social Security?

HI James, I think that needs to be notarized or apostilled, but I’ll ask Edd to respond. He knows the requirements better than I do.

Suzan is correct. That’s all I did with my SS letter.

Thanks so much Susan and Edd, that is very helpful. That makes it much easier than requesting a special letter from Social Security.

Do you have to take your social security income to qualify for proof of income? I will have the minimum but don’t want to access before I need to. (I am almost 62).

Karen, if you’re qualifying under the retiree visa, you need to show some kind of income. It can be from other sources; needn’t be social security.

    Hi Ed,
I wanted to make sure I understand about the letter. The one I get is like a card to let me know the amt I will be getting for that current yr. it’s not the same size as a normal 8×10 sheet. Is that the same one that you guys are referring to? If so it’s awfully small to notarize but I guess it can be done.

No, Brenda, that will never fly here. Go to http://www.ssa.gov/myaccount/ to create a proper award letter that can be notarized and apostilled.

    Thanks Ed. Glad I asked

In May 2013 we had to go to the nearest Ecuadorian Consulate to get my wife’s Social Security
statement stamped as proof of income.
