Hello, My family is visiting Ecuador for the first time this January and I have few loose ends to finish up with. If some one could help me with a transportation answer I would greatly appreciate it. I would like to drive from Playas to Cuenca and I would like any suggestions about renting a car. The hotel was not able to help because it is a one way trip where I am dropping off the car in Cuenca. Also, I was wondering if I need an international drivers license in Ecuador or is a U.S. license sufficient? Thanks for any help. Larry S

Larry, I’m not sure why you would want to do that. Playas isn’t exactly a hotbed for rental car companies and even if you could find a willing participant a one way rental would be astronomically expensive. Better to get yourselves to Guayaquil and either fly or take a bus (they’re safe and inexpensive) to Cuenca.

Edd, Thanks for the help. I would like to travel by road so that I get a better feel for the country. We are considering to relocate. Would I take a taxi to Guayaquil and rent from there? Is it easy to find a taxi in Playas or or am I looking at a bus trip? Thanks Larry S

Buses go literally everywhere in this country and there are taxis everywhere as well so that would be your choice based on cost and convenience. A one way rental is going to be expensive no matter where it originates. Get a “feel for the country” looking out the window of a bus while someone else drives.
