    I am doing research prior to our plan to retire in Ecuador next year. Toughest challenge seems to be where to live. With prices what they are, a place in Cuenca and another on the coast seems plausible. We plan to rent for at least 6 months before making any commitments. I believe from everything I’ve read Ecuador is truly safe, but why all the gated communities? And, if looking for a home directly on the beach (looking from Playas to Canoa), is it safe to be outside of a gated community?
