ParticipantHow exciting!
I think it is a great idea to check out beach and Central Valley life.I put together this list of contacts I have made on editorial trips… I hope you find it helpful.

I suggest looking into flying to Liberia and then out of San Jose.
Do you speak Spanish. The Central Valley is very doable by bus, yet speaking Spanish would make that easier to figure out the system once you are there. That expat group in Grecia in the document is a great resource for that area.
I live in Villarreal, just 2 miles from Playa Tamarindo so let me know if you end up in the area.

ParticipantCosta Rica has great public transportation in the Central Valley, it is easy to get around by bus. On the coast, the schedules are more irregular so it is not as convenient.
Right now the colon is very low, it is about 495 colones for a $1 so that is quite painful. Imported items are very expensive and restaurants especially in tourist places are also expensive. Costa Rica is the most expensive country in Latin America, yet I still love Costa Rica and don’t plan on moving any time soon.
Please feel free to reach out with any specific questions as you continue with your research.

ParticipantThere are a lot of retirees in the Central Valley especially in the Grecia, Atenas, Escazu area. Although you need to be a resident to receive healthcare, yet private care is much more affordable in Costa Rica compared to the USA.
There are lots of meet ups for expats to get to know each other. If you decide to come to Costa Rica, reach out to me for more information.

Facebook groups are very helpful to find out about community and rentals… be specific about the area, and search for groups with the town’s name, such as Tamarindo Chit Chat or Tamarindo Garage Sale.
Here are some recommendations, places I have experienced on editorial trips and had positive stays/interactions.

ParticipantA Canadian tourist was killed in Tamarindo, Costa Rica, during a home invasion and robbery on July 11.
It is very sad and was very close to my home. This invasion happened on Los Jobos, the back road going into Tamarindo. Personally, I chose to live in a gated community surrounded by neighbors and with a 24 hour guard becuase I feel safer in this type of environment, even 11 year ago when I built my home when there were no such incidents like this occuring.

ParticipantI love to share the contact of my lawyer Rosa and her daughter Jimena at Themis Legal. https://themislegalcr.com/
I used them for my divorce and continue to use their counsil.
They sent me this recently:
“I just wanted to share with you that we are now offering the service for the FBI reports for the criminal reports people need for residency and other things here in Costa Rica.
So the person can come to our office, and we can take the fingerprints.
In addition, we are doing all of the apostilles for vital documentations in the USA and Canada; and RCMP check (equivalent to FBI) in Canada as well.”
