MemberHi Gilles, I’m Bel, the Mexico Correspondent. As soon as you become a resident you can enter the health care system. I would recommend making an appointment with your closest Mexican Consulate and applying to get the ball rolling.

MemberHi Lyle,
These all sound great, and I would recommend joining the expat facebook groups of the places you are interested in. Even small town usually have a facebook group. Join a few groups in the cities you have narrowed it down to. The expats living there will be able to recommend real estate agents, rental groups to join, and other ways of finding a great place for you and your sweet little miniature poodle.
This is the best way as they are living there right now so you get real answers in real time. Every expat group I’ve joined anywhere in Mexico is full of happy, helpful people and this is also a great way to make contacts and friends before you even arrive.
Of course you also look on vacation rental sites like: AirBnB, VRBO, and many others. Here is a link to the top rental apps – https://www.capterra.com/sem-compare/vacation-rental-software/?utm_source=ps-google&utm_medium=ppc&utm_campaign=:1:CAP:2:COM:3:All:4:INTL:5:BAU:6:SOF:7:Desktop:8:BR:9:Vacation_Rental&network=g&gclid=Cj0KCQjwgrO4BhC2ARIsAKQ7zUkGTBFaZTCPeCZ13t4QNwt53IAkmUsXyFJmwDQbAO7tv0Gsi_pvtGMaAirFEALw_wcB
I hope this helps in your search.

MemberHi lovelies,
I’m Bel, the Mexico Correspondent and I can tell you I’ve spoken to quite a few black people living in Mexico and they all say the same thing. They feel welcome and safe. As for LGBTQ, well all I can say is welcome friends. My beautiful girls (downstairs neighbours) are getting married next year in Mexico City and we’ve had many conversations about being gay in Mexico. They say it’s widely accepted for foreigners and most people don’t care. I hope this helps you feel safer. I sincerely hope it does and if you’d like any other questions answered I’d love to have a chat. My email is – bwoodhouse@internationalliving.com
Ciao for now, Bel.BWOODHOUSE 0
MemberHi Jim,
I’m back from my travels through Central Mexico and have spoken to my friend. As it’s entering high season now, all of her units are booked I’m sorry to say. The same with my other friend. I’ve asked a third and am waiting to hear back.
But my landlord is Miguel and he is in charge of a bunch of unfurnished apartments around that price range. His number is +52 987 876 0795 if you’d like to try him. There are always people coming and going, but as I said, they are unfurnished so you’d want to have a conversation with him about what is included – all have beds, fans, a/c, fridge etc. Gas and internet are generally included but you would have to pay your electric bill and buy drinking water.
Hope this helps.
Cheers, Bel.
PS – I know you said you don’t have social media, but I would suggest signing up for Facebook just to enquire in rental groups in Merida, Vallodolid, and around the Riviera Maya. It is a very quick way to get answers and find a property especially at the lower price end.BWOODHOUSE 0
MemberHi Jim,
Yes, Cozumel can have lower rental costs if you get a non furnished apartment long term like I did. My rent is $500/mth. But if you’re only looking for 6-8 weeks you are probably better off with AirBnB. There are a tonne of bargains to be found on everything from renting a room in a house, through an entire house. You can get around Cozumel very cheaply. The collectivo is only 10 pesos (50c) and it will take you around San Miguel de Cozumel. NOT all around the island but all of the township yes. Otherwise there are taxis and prices can be negotiated, especially as you speak Spanish.
The other option is I have a friend who is a property manager who may have something depending on the price you’re after. I also have another friend who rents out an apartament above her house (not sure of cost) and take a look in the facebook group Cozumel Rental Properties, people always post places on there. Here is the link – https://www.facebook.com/groups/1495458987372888
Hope this helps. I’m travelling the next two weeks but will check back in periodically.

MemberI can only speak for my region of Mexico but there are a lot of plastic surgeons here in the Riviera Maya and even the hospitals have their own cosmetic surgeons. Here is a link to the hospitals webpage so you can find out more – https://www.costamed.com.mx/en/especialidades/plastic-cosmetic-and-reconstructive-surgery

MemberHi Lynne, hola from Mexico.
Yes there are plenty of options for shared living. When I first came to Cozumel I lived in a house where the family still lived for 3 months and it was wonderful. I would recommend checking out Airbnb and looking at rooms in a house, or, joining the expat FAcebook group of where you are interested in living. When you narrow down a town or city, just Google “expats + (the city)” and it will come up with all of the expat groups. All you do is join and ask the question. I’m sure you will get a ton of referals.
Another option is to look up home stays. Or farm stays if that interests you. That way you are helping a local family or business which is lovely as well. Cheers, Bel, Mexico Correspondent.BWOODHOUSE 0
MemberHola from Mexico,
Sorry I don’t. I live in the Riviera Maya which is about a four to five hour flight from Lake Chapala so i don’t get there enough to know local guides. What I would do is get on the expat facebook group, and ask there. The expats living there will be able to give you tonnes of recommendations of lovely guides they’ve used and also English speaking ones if you don’t speak Spanish. Here’s a couple I found for you –https://www.facebook.com/groups/212463755765570

MemberHola from Cozumel!
Yes you have done the perfect thing for accomodation. December is the high season so it’s harder to find accomodation and I would recommend you book quickly as they fill up fast so if you’ve found some places you like, then you’re set.
As for meet ups, I would recommend joining Cozumel 4 You, which is the main Facebook page for people to ask questions about everything and anything Cozumel. There’s different groups to join and meetups so if you jump on Coz4you then all you have to do is ask once and you’ll get a lot of responses for things to do and different events to attend.
As for orienting yourself as a new explorer, I love the free walking tour run by Tati Bienes, her and her husband have lived here over 20years and are a wealth of knowledge and do the tours for tips (I usually leave them a good tip as they’re doing it for free). Here is the link – https://tati82.wixsite.com/freewalkingtour.
Any more questions, please reach out and I’ll do my best to answer.

MemberHi, I’m Bel, the Mexico Correspondent and this is great timing. I was just speaking to someone from Chapala last week who was telling me about the amazing old Franciscan Chapel in Ajijic that is beautiful and the young man from Ajijic who came back to perform with the 48 piece orchestra – he’s studying at Julliard in New York – so there’s some lovely culture in the area.
But to answer your question, I’m not sure of your length of stay, budget, or preference of hotel, AirBnB or apartment so I did a quick search and here’s a nice mix of all of the above for you to have a look at and see if anything takes your fancy.
It’s right next to (3miles) from Chapala so there’s plenty to do and see and if you may find something cheaper in Chapala if you don’t like anything in Ajijic.
Hope this helps. Cheers, Bel.BWOODHOUSE 0
MemberHi Allen,
Yes of course I’d love to help. Okay in my area, the Riviera Maya, there are a range of options. You can choose to get your dental work done at a hospital that specialises in it like Costamed (I’ve attached the link) or you can just do a quick Google search of the place in Mexico you’d like to vacation and find an English speaking dentist.
Another great idea is to get on the expat Facebook group of where you’re looking to go, and ask the expats who live there for a recommendation for a good English speaking dentist. Every expat group will have a ton of recommendations.
Here’s the link for Costamed if you’re looking at my area.
https://www.costamed.com.mx/en/especialidades/dentistry
But as I said, first choose where you want to vacation, then just ask the question of the local expat facebook group and you can find a bunch of terrific dentists to choose from.

MemberHi, I’m Bel the Mexico Correspondent and I was in San Miguel de Allende a couple of months ago. Is this the San Miguel you are referring to? I live in San Miguel de Cozumel, and there are other San Miguel’s throughout the country so I just want to check I give you the correct information.
Assuming it’s this San Miguel, allow me to put your mind at ease. I went out to the popular expat neighbourhoods outside of the city and they were full of beautiful modern homes and good infrastructure for driving around, close to major shopping malls and quiet. But if mountains aren’t your thing, then on both east and west coasts you’ll fine lively, fun beach towns and cities with plenty to do and beautiful natural scenery. I would recommend checking out (scroll to the bottom of) our Mexico page which has 43 places listed an there are plenty to choose from depending on the area you’d like to live. You can find that here – https://internationalliving.com/countries/mexico/
Warmest regards, Bel – Mexico Correspondent.BWOODHOUSE 0
MemberHola from Mexico, we have very good dental care and because of it’s close with cheap flights a lot of people make a holiday out of it when getting dental work done. I would suggest picking a place in Mexico you’ve always wanted to visit and with the money you save you can have a nice little vacation as well.
