Wendy’s correct. Just as the U.S. election had expats rooting for either candidate, the same is happening here now with a liberal vs. conservative. As opposed to the U.S. where the angst seems non-stop four months later, Ecuador is for the most part “muy tranquillo.” And whatever is happening on the political front here doesn’t have much effect on expat life except to offer a subject for conversation and debate.

Jeanne, my wife Cynthia and I love the mountains and the coast as well. After coming to Ecuador and experiencing both, you & Frank sit down and ask yourselves which area would make you happier 24/7/365. Live there and visit the other as often as you like. We chose Cuenca and have never regretted it. But just this morning we were talking about planning a visit to the beach. It’s great to live in a country with so many affordable options!

I’ve lived in Cuenca for almost 7 years and have never heard of this person. ‘Nuff said.

Since ATM’s are plentiful, bringing lots of cash isn’t necessary. Let your bank know your travel plans so your account doesn’t get flagged when you start using it in EC. 20’s are the highest denomination normally exchanged and, no, it isn’t necessary to report cash at customs.

We’ve used Nestor Reinoso as a private driver and he’s terrific–bilingual, punctual, and professional. His email is nestorefrainreinosoguaman@gmail.com.

Shaun, I have no idea. My wife and I each have a computer and a “dumb phone,” so the thought of having more than 3 devices isn’t part of our reality.

Dave, we won’t return to EC from the US until about the time you leave so getting together won’t be possible. Take the double decker bus tour from Parque Calderon that leaves every hour to get a great overview of the city. Stop by TerraDiversa tour company on Calle Larga for ideas on day trips you can take while in town. At San Sebas Cafe, Don Colon Restaurant, Fabiano’s, Sabatino’s, and Windhorse Cafe you should run into expats who will be happy to share their experiences with you.

High altitude affects different people in different ways, Dave. Many people experience no problems at all. The most common symptoms are headache and fatigue. Tell her wife to drink plenty of water, eat more carbs, and avoid or limit alcohol consumption.

in reply to: Galapagos Islands Tour recommendation #654164

Without question I can recommend Metropolitan Touring for the Galapagos. My wife and I had a fabulous experience with them this spring on a western itinerary expedition. This is a luxury category provider, and with a bucket list destination like this I advise you to stretch your budget. Accommodations, meals, and most importantly, the tour guides are on the highest level.

No, Mark, construction continues. And continues—–. The worthy project has ended up being an embarrassment to the city with delays and cost overruns but will be operational sometime next year.

    1. If you are referring to qualifying for an investment visa, the value used is the municipal value.
    2. Yes, you need a visa and a cedula (national ID) to qualify for all senior discounts.
    3. Yes. Your EC banking institution can explain the procedure.

in reply to: Availability of organic foods in Cuenca #651117

I can’t possibly address all the specific items you have listed, but I’m happy to share that there is a great deal of organic produce in Cuenca, lots of vegetarian restaurants, and health food stores like Nectar and Live Green Superfoods.

in reply to: Quito to Cuence Transportation Options #651116

The quickest is of course a 45 minute direct flight. You can also take an 8 hour bus trip. Since you’re going to be in the country for awhile you might consider hiring a private bilingual guide, break the trip into 2 days, and enjoy the magnificent scenery through the Avenue of the Volcanoes route connecting the two cities.

in reply to: Availability of Inexpensive Rentals #651115

Beyond the usual sites (vrbo, airbnb, craigslist) subscribe to Gringo Post, an online community bulletin board in Cuenca. Rentals are often posted there and you can submit your own post stating your requirements.
