EI EXPERT – EDD STATONParticipant
Rich, expats who want the conveniences of a city without city life reside in outlying areas of Cuenca like Paute, Gualaceo, Challabamba, San Joaquin, and Yunguilla. You might especially like Paute, about a 45 minute drive from Cuenca (I’m sure you’re aware you’ll need a vehicle with the kinds of places you’re considering), since it’s an actual town with restaurants and a popular Sunday market.
EI EXPERT – EDD STATONParticipantI would think that a notification to you on company letterhead detailing the amount of your monthly pension and the date benefits begin will be sufficient.
EI EXPERT – EDD STATONParticipantAndrea, a friend of mine had the exact issue regarding the transfer of her visa into a new passport and I know it was a hassle involving more than one trip to Guayaquil. Suzan’s advice is right on–get your passport renewed before moving to EC.
EI EXPERT – EDD STATONParticipantI highly recommend our personal dentist, Dra. Danny Ordonez. She speaks perfect English and doesn’t charge “gringo prices.” Email her at dannymdoi@hotmail.com.
EI EXPERT – EDD STATONParticipantIndeed they are.
EI EXPERT – EDD STATONParticipantSave your money and get the work done in Ecuador. I just inquired for a friend about getting an implant. High quality work that would cost $5000 in the States can be gotten here for $800-$1000.
EI EXPERT – EDD STATONParticipantFernando, check out GringoTree and GringoPost online. There are frequent listings for available rentals on both sites.
EI EXPERT – EDD STATONParticipantHola, Jo Anna. Since I’m the Cuenca guy I should probably answer your inquiry. I’ve probably walked past both of the places you mentioned dozens of times (although a quick search indicates El Monastero is on Padre Aguirre, not Hermano Miguel). Both are indeed in fine locations for exploring the city.
I checked Kayak and it looks like no matter what you’re in for a long day of travel. We always fly into New York because of family nearby and get better rates and schedules than anyone we know flying anywhere else. Try connecting there instead of Chicago. Regarding airlines, if possible we fly with Latin American carriers. They are more lenient with baggage, have more legroom, and honestly treat their customers better.
EI EXPERT – EDD STATONParticipantJohn, purchasing a property in advance of your visa application would not pose a problem and in fact could be to your advantage. I’ve known several folks here on a temporary visa and depending on their real estate purchase to gain residency. When problems with receiving their deed occurred (it’s Ecuador–these things happen) they had to unexpectedly cough up $25K for a CD to legally remain in the country.
Any answer to your second question would be pure conjecture and idle speculation, but one cannot combine assets to meet the current $25K requirement.
EI EXPERT – EDD STATONParticipantMontanita & Canoa are tops for me, but Suzan’s right, “best” beach is totally an individual thing.
EI EXPERT – EDD STATONParticipantI personally bring back those mega bottles from the States, but I see vitamins in all the pharmacies and health food stores.
EI EXPERT – EDD STATONParticipantJon, it’s great to get your feedback & I’m so glad you have found our comments helpful. I’ll be happy to hook up once you’re settled in Cuenca.
EI EXPERT – EDD STATONParticipantCongratulations! We’re actually at 42 years now & going strong. Family & friends will get over it–do what’s best for you! Good luck with your journey.
EI EXPERT – EDD STATONParticipantThere are public courts at the Coliseum where expats play each week. I believe lessons are offered as well. Tennis is available at the private country club, which also has a 9 hole golf course, pool, and restaurants.
EI EXPERT – EDD STATONParticipantI read this regarding some of Chase’s business customers but not as an across the board measure. Still, it’s chilling.
