I recently learned that what my gut said was an inflated number of gringos in Cuenca is true. The number of “expats” counted includes returning Ecuadorians with dual citizenship. Plus these figures represent the total number of visas granted but don’t account for folks who were unhappy and left.

Taxi drivers are never tipped. Sometimes a 10% tip is added to your bill in restaurants; if not leaving that amount is appropriate. For hotel staff bringing your bags to the room perhaps $1 would be a proper tip.

Thomas, Hotel Andino — or any hotel — will send someone to pick you up (for a fee and I can’t remember what that is…maybe $10. Or you can purchase a taxi ticket at the window inside the airport for about $7. You will need to have the address of the hotel with you as not all taxi drivers know the address of every hotel. There is a hotel right across the street from the airport and I believe it may be called Hotel Aeropuerto — but I am not sure. I will try to look tomorrow when I fly in. The hotel looks fine — nothing fancy. You might try googling it. (This is Suzan, by the way — not sure why the forum software is identifying me as Edd. I could do a lot of mischief with that…)

Because of import taxes electronics are much more expensive here than in the US. Brand name personal care products you enjoy may not be available in Ecuador.

Bobby, never heard of this place. From what I can see online, it has very basic accommodations and is not too convenient to El Centro. Both of these factors are probably why the price is cheaper.

Cuenca may not be your best choice, Fred. It’s rarely sunny here the entire day, and sometimes we have cloudy skies for a week or more straight.
