EI EXPERT – EDD STATONParticipant
Your information is correct, Stan. The plan announced by the government this week is that the airport will be closed soon for a few weeks to temporarily resurface the runway. Next July when our dry season begins again the runway will be replaced and lengthened. The situation has caused havoc for travelers since the incident occurred in late April. Fortunately rainfall now is minimal so most flights have been taking off and landing on schedule.
EI EXPERT – EDD STATONParticipantHey, Steve. Good news–there’s a Claro store on the bottom floor of the Airport Center across the road from the terminal that’s open until 10 at night where you can purchase a SIM card and minutes.
EI EXPERT – EDD STATONParticipantHola, Steve. We’re in the States now and shortly after returning to Ecuador will be heading to Galapagos for a week. Sometime towards the end of May will probably work out. Give us time to get back home & settled and I’ll be in touch to firm something up.
Edd
EI EXPERT – EDD STATONParticipantSouthern Ecuador felt the tremors but fortunately places like Cuenca, Loja, and Vilcabamba sustained no damage or injuries.
EI EXPERT – EDD STATONParticipantHey, Gretchen. Wish I could help but we’re those people you referred to who go back and forth often enough to bring back everything we need. We’ve found mail service here to be so unreliable and expensive that we’ve given up even trying. Hopefully someone else will chime in with better news.
EI EXPERT – EDD STATONParticipantNatalie, I just had fiber optic service installed yesterday and it rocks! And their service was great too-called to ask if they could come a day early and two technicians showed up right on time. Representatives at Puntonet speak English–call and ask for an update on when the service will be available in your area.
EI EXPERT – EDD STATONParticipantExpat hangouts in Cuenca include San Sebas Cafe, Fabiano’s, Sabatino’s, Inca Lounge, Windhorse Cafe, and Restaurante Don Colon. Subscribe to Gringo Post (a Cuenca community bulletin board) and post a request to meet folks when you are in town. You’ll leave Cuenca with more friends than you would have thought possible.

A friend has their fiber optic plan and is so satisfied that I plan to explore upgrading when I return to EC in January. The service isn’t offered everywhere in Cuenca yet, but they can tell you if your barrio is ready now.

The trip from Cuenca’s airport to the city takes no more than 15 minutes. Maribel’s email is maribel@ecuadorablehomes.com. Have fun on your trip!
EI EXPERT – EDD STATONParticipantMost do. You can opt out and join later but it will cost you. http://finance.yahoo.com/news/opt-medicare-122947160.html
EI EXPERT – EDD STATONParticipantBuses go literally everywhere in this country and there are taxis everywhere as well so that would be your choice based on cost and convenience. A one way rental is going to be expensive no matter where it originates. Get a “feel for the country” looking out the window of a bus while someone else drives.
EI EXPERT – EDD STATONParticipantLarry, I’m not sure why you would want to do that. Playas isn’t exactly a hotbed for rental car companies and even if you could find a willing participant a one way rental would be astronomically expensive. Better to get yourselves to Guayaquil and either fly or take a bus (they’re safe and inexpensive) to Cuenca.
EI EXPERT – EDD STATONParticipantTry Cuenca Car Share (http://www.cuencacarshare.com/). Their vehicles are bigger and rates lower than the international rental companies.
