This year, Carnaval was in  February and Semana Santa is this week, of course. I’ve not yet gone to the Ecuador coast during Semana Santa, but I’ve been in other Latin American countries at that time and practically EVERYONE goes to the beach. I would rather avoid the crowds and the noise… not my thing. It looks like Easter 2014 will be April 20 and Carnaval should be the last week of Feb and first of March, ending on March 4. So if you go to the coast in March of 2014, after the 4th, you should be okay. If I am right about those dates, of course….
I’m glad you found the answer. I have no idea what an Interact card is. Maybe I have been out of the States too long… 🙂
Hi Gretchen, what do you mean by “deal breaker”? If you mean that they won’t negotiate on price, yes. Because short-term rental properties make all their money during Carnaval, Semana Santa and New Years….
James, regarding my note about attorneys. You may want to contact Roberto first. I understand Gabriela is very backlogged…
Hi James, just to clarify… are you looking for all these services in Quito? An attorney in Quito who may be able to help you is Roberto Moreno: roberto@morenodidonato.com. Another is Gabriela Espinosa — see her website: http://www.migrationecuador.com
For farmland, what area of Ecuador are you interested in? And the closest beach to Quito is about four hours away by car. If you have a specific beach town in mind, we can offer some better suggestions.
A Spanish school in Quito that also operates in Cuenca, on the coast and in the Amazon is the Simon Bolivar School:Â www.simon–bolivar.com/
And there is no way to hire household help or a chauffeur until you know where you will be living. And then your best resource for referrals will be your neighbors…
I love my Capital One debit card — it’s one of the few out there that does not charge foreign ATM fees. It’s a Visa card, but I don’t know that the difference between Visa and Mastercard is all that great here. When I use a credit card, I actually prefer my America Express car for the Membership Rewards points I accrue. And because they offer terrific customer service.
Danica, I think your budget will do here in Ecuador. But don’t come just for the low cost of living…
Hi Nick, you might want to contact Santiago Andrade: santiago1397@gmail.com. And welcome to Cotacachi! A customs agent who may be able to help you is Sandra Baquero: Sandy_Baquero@hotmail.com.
Hi Jude, you might try and contact Bernie Uhe at bernie@huilcorealestate.com — he may know someone who can help you.
Right, I would never wear sweat pants out of the house but I know a lot of people who do… More power to them, of course and it is none of my business, but I wouldn’t feel comfortable in them. And you wouldn’t see an Ecuadorian wearing them out to dinner.
As for biking, you’ll probably want to find a route with little traffic — then you’ll be fine.
You might also try AirBnB. Here is one:Â http://www.airbnb.es/rooms/641683
For email on that, email Juan at casasama@cablemodem.com.ec
This is a great location in El Centro.ÂEdd may have some better suggestions, but have you tried www.hotelotorongo.com/?
I always prefer to have my own car, but totally depends on you…
You probably won’t be happy with the public plan. It is bare bones and facilities are ill-equipped to handle anything more than minor emergencies, etc. But you should research some of the hospital plans, depending where you might decide to live.
That sounds right to me, but I’ll ask Edd to verify.
