I’ve taken both Tame and Aerogal — no problems with either.
Hi Ray, an Ecuadorian friend who works in Ecuador’s construction industry tells me that “Yes there are a few providers who can give this service. A little bit expensive because is not well known yet in Ecuador. They are imported.”
I will see if I can find out.
It is easy enough to open a bank account but I think you’d have to have a credit history to get a credit card. I bank with Jyske Bank in Denmark and they issue credit cards. Not sure if they come from a US bank, but you might take a look at jgam.com
Yes, it seems lots of people do it. I don’t personally as there is nothing I need that I can’t get elsewhere… or I wait until my next trip to the States. But lots of people do it.
One more comment: The main problem with playing online poker anywhere is that US Banks refuse to deposit money into “gambling” sites – so you will need to have a non-US bank account and a non-US IP address to make a deposit to any Real Money online sites like PokerStars
And P.S.: The hide IP website Edd uses is http://www.spotflux.com.
Hola again, I am not in Ecuador right now, so I checked with a friend who is there to see if she could access these (I think) sites. And she just wrote me to say: “Looks like all they do is download the app and open an account. If they aleady have one I think they should be okay. Looks like the app is out of Manchester so it is not based in the US.”
Does this help?
Contact our doctor in Quito with your questions, Dr. Alvaro Dávalos: adavalosp@ecnet.ec.
Ray, I think you just answered your own question. 🙂 Anything is possible…
I don’t know the answer to this one, but I will see what I can find out.
Sheila, no you don’t need any vaccinations prior to the trip, although if you feel more comfortable getting some that’s totally up to you. I’ve never been asked my customs anywhere for anything to bring in medication. However, it’s a good idea to have the medication labelled with her name and doctor’s ID and if you have the prescription, bring it. I wouldn’t worry about it, really.
Yes, you can ship easily back to the States. From Latin America the preferred option is usually DHL and most vendors will be able to point you to a shipper. In Otavalo, you’ll find LOTS of options for shipping, for example. You shouldn’t have any problems in any sizeable city finding someone to help you.
Hi Alan, there are lots of good restaurants in Cotacahi, both local and expat-owned. Dan and I love to eat at the mercado – -our favorite booth is Dona Esther’s — $2.50 for a hug plate of carne colorado and a bottle of water. Other local-owned establishments you might want to try are La Llenador, D’Anita’s and El Turista (unfortunate name). And if you’re vegan (or event if you’re not), check out Bhakti — REALLY good and very inexpensive. Expat-owned restaurants to try include Casi Olivia, Serendipity, El Trebol and Casa de las Frutas. And the Monkey Bar is a good place to meet expats of an evening. Don’t be shy — just introduce yourself and join in the conversations.
As for getting from Cotacachi to Mindo, yes those are your best options, although Eunice Howe (unihowe@hotmail.com) often puts together tours from Cotacachi to Mindo that are VERY affordable. You might email her and ask her for details.
You’re right, Bobby. I happen to love Quito and it has a lot to offer…
Here are some places to look for rentals – I suspect most of these will want a long-term arrangement, but you might get lucky:
