How Do I Get a Tourist Visa for Ecuador?

Brian L. Says:

What do I need to know about getting a tourist visa for Ecuador? Is there a way to extend its duration?

IL Contributor Fiona Mitchell Writes:

When you enter Ecuador, you will receive a passport stamp, commonly called a T-3, allowing you to stay in the country for 90 days within a rolling one-year period from your date of entry (i.e. you can come and go within a year as long as you don’t exceed your 90 days).

Residents of most countries, not just those from North America, Europe, and other Latin American countries, receive the stamp. Citizens of around 40 countries do not qualify to receive the T-3 passport stamp.

You should check with an immigration attorney if you are not sure whether your country qualifies for the T-3 stamp.

In the past, visitors were able to leave Ecuador at or before the 90-day mark granted by their T-3 stamp, then return later, receiving a new T-3 stamp and an additional 90 days. This is no longer the case.

Since 2017, there have been two options for extending your stay in Ecuador: you can ask for a one-time 90-day extension on your T-3; or you may apply for a Special Tourist Visa that will allow you to stay for another 180 days, but be aware that you will not be allowed to work in Ecuador with this visa. It is strictly for tourism purposes only.

We have lots more information about visiting Ecuador available on the dedicated page of the IL website.
