Linda B. Says:
How easy is it to get around Portugal by bus?
IL Executive Editor Jennifer Stevens Says:
Hi Linda,
The bus system in Portugal is fragmented and usually comprises various municipalities providing service to and from the locations under their jurisdiction.
It is very difficult to find a comprehensive map of the available intra-country lines. The best bet is to use buses for only intra-city travel if necessary.
Most buses in the major metro areas are modern, equipped with internet, inexpensive, on-time, and safe as far as mass transit goes. That said, I should mention that, like most city bus systems, petty theft is always possible. You should always be aware of your belongings and surroundings.
This website has information about buses and trams in Lisbon in English. And here is a phone app for Lisbon that will help with mass transit.
Information for Porto can be accessed here, and an app for your phone here.
