How Much Does Household Help Cost in Panama?

Marsha G. Says:

Is it easy to hire household help in Panama? How much does it cost?

IL Panama Editor Jessica Ramesch Writes:

Like many expats, you may find it difficult to resist having a maid. It’s easy to find help in Panama, and a good employee can greatly improve your quality of life.

A full-time, live-in maid can cost you as little as $250 a month.

Many capitalinos (residents of the capital) have part-time maids whom they’ll pay $20 per visit. This usually includes cleaning and laundry (no ironing) and can include cooking and babysitting, too.

If you plan to hire anyone on a full-time basis, make sure you talk to your Panama attorney about drawing up a contract. Ask about paying your employees’ social security, required vacation time, etc.

Most locals and foreigners hire maids “off the books” because it seems so much easier, but you can protect yourself and be a better employer if you choose to do things by the book.
