I’m 71, retired & soon to be single. What locations might be better or someone like me? I like warm weather.
Author of Single and Ready to Move Overseas, Jessica Ramesch Says:
Hi Rick,
I’m single myself. I began writing about life in Panama for International Living shortly after I moved to Panama City in 2005. It turned out to be the perfect way to get out there, meet new people, learn about activities and more.
Though I chose Latin America, there are happy single expats of all ages in Europe, Asia…you name it.
Here are two important things to consider, right off the bat…two things we’ve noticed about the happiest single expats we’ve met over the decades. First, they’ll tell you they were running to something, not away from something. And secondly, they had to profile themselves—pretty ruthlessly—to settle on the right destination. They had to shine a fluorescent light on their wants and needs.
It’s up to you to decide what you need. You mention you like warm weather. That’s a start—it helps narrow down your chosen climate.
Do you want a small town or a large city? Mountains or beach? How social are you? And are you willing to learn a new language?
If you’re a stay-at-home type who likes having a few close friends, that’s fine. Don’t want to learn another language? Yes, it will limit your choices… but you’ll still have some. Better to be honest with yourself and plan accordingly.
With that said, I would definitely advise you to consider areas with established expat communities; you’ll find most of the spots we recommend have that expat support system in place, and it’s a wonderful thing to be able to rely on when you’re new and flying solo!
That said, you don’t need to “have it all figured out.” Yes, it’s important to analyze your personality and make a list of things you can’t live without (and trade-offs you’re happy to make). But things can shift and come into focus over time, too.
We know plenty of single expats who enjoyed making the move overseas, had wonderful experiences, and learned a great deal— and then chose to move somewhere new.
