Jerome W. Says:
I live in the United States with my two dogs, and have thought about living in another country. What would I need to do?
IL Executive Editor Jennifer Stevens Says:
Hi Jerome,
I would first recommend becoming a member of International Living to receive our monthly online magazine. You’ll also get access to our 2024 Annual Global Retirement Index to determine which part of the world suits you best. You can do so here.
Once you have identified where in the world you would like to live, it’s best to do some further research on the country to help determine the specific area that suits you best. This might be a city, a region of the country, or even one of its islands.
Every month, International Living’s online magazine features deep dives into many regions in the world’s best retirement destinations, so paying close attention to those articles is a great first step.
You might also consider picking up a copy of the “Escape to…” guidebook for the country you’re interested in. These in-depth books dig deep into expat life in the country they cover. You’ll find everything from breakdowns of the various regions, to costs of living, to visa and residency information. See the full range of “Escape to…” guidebooks available here.
Next, consider attending one of our conferences—either in the U.S. or an in-country event for the retirement destination you like best. These conferences are where it all comes together.
You’ll spend a fun, interactive weekend hearing from our top live-overseas experts and mingling with other potential expats. You’ll also get to meet our speakers one-on-one to ask them specific questions and get their advice—such as what to consider when moving overseas with your two dogs. At the end, you’ll come away with all of the knowledge, advice, and on-the-ground contacts you need to make your move overseas with confidence. Our list of upcoming events is here.
Be sure to check back, as the details update when new events are confirmed.
I hope that’s helped you identify a path forward. IL can be with you on every step of your move-overseas journey. And we’d love to know where you decide to go…
