Peter K. Says:
Is it safe to drive from town to town in Mexico?
IL Mexico Correspondent Bel Woodhouse Says:
Hi Peter,
Yes, Mexico is safe to drive around. I’ve spoken to quite a few expats who have driven down from the U.S. across the country and never had a problem.
It’s also popular with expats living in Mexico to drive around the country exploring and travelling for a holiday.
Mexico has excellent infrastructure with wide, multi-lane highways, clearly marked signs and well-paved roads. Of course, like most countries, if you venture into smaller towns in lesser-known parts of Mexico the roadways may not be as well maintained, but for major routes getting around Mexico is an easy drive.
One sign I would pay attention to is “topes” which means speedbump. They love their topes which are generally in sets of more than one, are quite high and if hit at speed can damage tires so please be sure to slow right down the first few times to get a feel for how your car handles them.
