Living a more international life. Our readers are a diverse lot, but we all share that aspiration. It means seeing the entire world not as a collection of unknown, unfathomable locations, but as your home. A home with options that suit you, that fit your lifestyle and aspirations, and that is as much yours as is the place you were born.
Living more internationally is something to aspire to, especially now when all those heavenly destinations seem just that little bit farther away than before. Having our wings clipped, is, perhaps, a good thing. Maybe we were taking our freedom too much for granted.
If I’ve figured anything out from the lockdown, it’s that waiting for everything to align—job, nest-egg, investments, property booms, retirement—well, it just seems like procrastination now that we’re actually being forced to wait for our international lives to get back to full speed. But there is an upside to it all.
You can plan. Now’s the time to go beyond the “one day” dreams and start making plans. In this issue of International Living, we’ve collected stories and articles that are full of the practical details you need to help make everything go more smoothly when the world opens up once more, and examples of people who took the initiative and made their lives work for them, overseas.
IL Spain correspondent Marsha Scarbrough realized that if she were to settle into her adopted country properly, she’d need to speak the language. Rather than put it off, she jumped in with both feet, heading off to laugh, cry, eat, and party on an eight-day total immersion course in mid-Spain. Fortune favors the brave—she had a blast, and learned more than she could ever have hoped for.
Down in Vietnam, Pascal Rousseau realized that he could make a living by doing the thing he loves—cycling— and now runs his own business in the city of Hoi An. He found a life that fits him perfectly, in a place he loves.
And while we’re all waiting for the chance to get out there and find our own perfect corner of the world, we can all take the sound advice of investment expert Jeff D. Opdyke as he guides us through how to protect our savings by using one of our oldest, and most stable commodities to weather the storm.
Truly, we can’t wait until we can get back out there, but in the meantime, let’s take the time to dream, to plan, and to prepare.
