Seek Out Adventure and New Experiences Overseas

The American author Wilfred Petersen said: “A man practices the art of adventure when he breaks the chain of routine and renews his life through reading new books, traveling to new places, making new friends, taking up new hobbies, and adopting new viewpoints.”

There are many reasons to move overseas—better weather, a more affordable cost of living, lower-cost healthcare, a higher quality of life. But it’s also fun…an adventure. It gives you the opportunity to spread your wings, experience new things, indulge in new passions.

A man who fully embraces the “art of adventure” when he travels is our finance expert Jeff Opdyke. He’s recently returned from an Arabian adventure in Oman. It’s probably not a country that’s at the top of your vacation list…but maybe it should be. Modern but also unchanged by time, Jeff says: “I ventured to Oman, to see this quiet part of Arabia before it becomes an over-touristed, must-see hot spot.” Channeling his inner Lawrence of Arabia, Jeff got lost in a souk, glamped with turtles, and bought some gold.

You’ll read about expats who have moved overseas and are filling their days doing things they love. Jeff Sanchez ditched his life as a trial attorney in the U.S. and he and his wife Linda moved to Panama. He’s discovered a love for brewing. “There’s a budding craft brewing community growing throughout the country,” he says.

Over in France, Janice Deerwester is living her life to the fullest in a historic suburb of Paris. A former school teacher, she is busy writing a children’s book while also exploring the boulevards of the City of Light. Her advice to would-be expats is simple: “If you have a dream about living somewhere, make it happen.”

There’s a big world out there waiting to be explored…make the adventure happen.
