The nature of retirement has changed. These days, it’s not about working for 40 years and then slowing to a rocking-chair pace. It’s about reassessing what makes you happy, and then redesigning, reinventing what your life looks like.
That process becomes much easier with a retirement overseas. You can take the constant question of “how will I fund this?” out of the equation because your cost of living is lower. Plus in a new place, it’s easier to leave old notions and habits behind and find doors opening to new opportunities.
Take Anne Rose and her husband Keith. When they moved to Mexico in 2021, they couldn’t quite settle into the slow pace of life in the sleepy fishing village on the Baja Peninsula they call home. “After decades of hard work, doing nothing except reading or exercising seems like a waste,” Anne says. So she began baking—as a hobby to start—but the couple soon turned that hobby into a successful small business.
With so many options overseas, you can reinvent yourself in all sorts of ways and places. If you’re looking for the ultimate in retirement freedom (and fun), then you might consider a sailing retirement. We take a deep dive into what it’s really like to live on a sailboat and travel the world. “We love having the freedom to sail where we want, on our own schedule, and make our own adventures,” say Julie and Tom Bennett, one of two couples I spoke with who traded their on-land lives for fulltime adventure at sea. Doing it is easier than you might think, and they share their practical tips and advice for getting started.
The decision to retire overseas needn’t involve a full-scale change of lifestyle, though. It can simply be a way to facilitate more of what you love. Chip Stites wanted to travel more in his retirement but realized doing it from the U.S. wasn’t affordable.
