Pushkar: Experiencing India’s Magic at the World’s Largest Camel Fair

In your January issue, travel writer Margot Bigg returns to India. After five-plus years living there and consistent trips back to the subcontinent ever since, Margot was there to experience Pushkar Mela, the world’s largest camel fair, held every fall in India’s desert state of Rajasthan. With her this time was a group of North American writing students under her care.

“The first time I visited Pushkar, I was in my early 20s,” Margot writes. “I’d been backpacking around Northern India and a traveler I’d met somewhere or other had mentioned the town. ‘It’s full of hippies,’ she told me, which in itself was enough to convince me to check it out.”
