In this Editor’s Debrief, IL Correspondent Don Murray talks to Dan Prescher about a recent scouting trip to the Caribbean island haven of Roatán.
Even among Caribbean islands, this place is special. Don was surprised by the rolling hills and lush greenery. Though, Roatán has plenty of beaches, too. What’s more, the cost of living and property prices are much more affordable than you’ll find in some other Caribbean locales…
Don is not your typical “island guy,” but Roatán is one island he didn’t want to leave… He’ll tell you exactly why in this exclusive interview.

6. Don found that a superior quality of life would be possible for around $2,500 a month for a couple: “Other people get along on $2,000 a month. But around $2,500 to $3,000 seems to be a number where folks could live a very nice life on an island in the Caribbean.” Because Roatán is an island, nearly everything is imported. Typical items in the grocery store are at prices similar to those in the U.S. Typical tourist restaurants are also at U.S. prices. But fresh produce at fruit and vegetable stands, and fresh-caught seafood like snapper and lobster, are more affordable. For those dreaming about island life, Roatán has a lot to offer, at prices that would be unthinkable on islands such as Antigua or Grand Bahama. © Jason Holland/IL
