What Are Panama’s Gun Laws Like?

Edwin P. Says:

What are the restrictions on gun ownership in Panama? I enjoy target and skeet shooting.

IL Panama Editor Jessica Ramesch Says:

Hi Edwin,

Panama has much stricter gun ownership laws than the U.S., so it is important to know the details if you wish to own a firearm here.

In general, only Panamanian residents over the age of 18 (21 if you wish to carry the weapon with you) and have no criminal record are allowed to own firearms.

In order to legally obtain a firearm, you will need a license. You must complete a psychological exam, submit biometric facial recognition data, and provide DNA in addition to fingerprints.

The process of buying a gun here can take up to three months, as all of this must be completed first.

The types of firearms that are allowed for civilian ownership are limited to shotguns, rifles, and handguns. Assault weapons, machine guns, and other firearms that are considered too dangerous are prohibited.

Despite these restrictions, there is at least one option for you to keep enjoying target and skeet shooting: a club in Panama City called the Club de Tiro de Balboa (Balboa shooting club).

The club has been around since 1914 and lists skeet shooting as one of the activities. For more information visit its website here, or its Facebook page here.

I believe it still offers classes, so perhaps you don’t need a license or your own equipment to go shoot as a student. The club should be able to help you with all the details of becoming a member.
