What Are the “Must Play” Golf Courses in Portugal?

Michael J. Says:

Portugal is high on our list of potential retirement venues, but good golf is a key element in making a decision. We’d like suggestions on the five “must play” courses in the country. Thanks.

Hi Michael,

Golf is a key part of why I choose to live on Portugal’s Silver Coast. It’s arguably one of the best golf coastlines in southern Europe. It isn’t the tourist-heavy Algarve, or Spain’s busy Costa del Sol. You won’t find anything close to that kind of mass tourism.

Most importantly, though, there’s incredible golf steps from my door, and I’m about as close to the beach as you can get.

I can head out for some casual chipping and putting after morning coffee… Hit a round on one of several nearby courses before a lazy lunch at a beachside restaurant for less than $10… And meet up with golf buddies later at the clubhouse for sundowners.

Some of my favorite courses on the Silver Coast include the Royal Óbidos, West Cliffs, and Praia D’El Rey where I live.

However, for a golf vacation I’d put Quinta do Lago, Monte Rei, and Palmares on the list… All of these are in the Algarve.

The golf there is expensive—and tee times need to be booked months in advance. That’s fine for a vacation… It doesn’t work for me for a lifestyle. Hence, why I chose to live on the Silver Coast.
