Carey V. Says:
What’s the best way to learn Portuguese if I want to move there?
IL Contributor Terry Coles Writes:
Knowing some Portuguese before you arrive in Portugal will make it much easier to integrate into the country and culture. There are plenty of choices to suit your education needs.
If you are in the US, prior to your departure you may want to investigate the language training services offered by the Department of State.
Also, consider taking classes at your local university or a local language school. Additionally, the Camões Institute offers an e-learning program for those coming to Portugal.
Once in Portugal, if you plan on being in the north, you might contact inlingua, which offers distance learning as well as onsite classes.
In the southwest, the University of Lisbon has an excellent reputation. Also in Lisbon, Lusa Language School offers a variety of options: intensives, private lessons, one-day and online courses, social activities, and more.
People often first look at free options of learning Portuguese with apps such as www.duolingo.com. But be careful—this app and many of the others available are for Brazilian Portuguese.
Language Drops on the other hand and the vocabulary building app Fun Easy Learn are definitely Continental, or European, as it’s also called, in their emphasis.
