Where Can We Stay in Belize for 20 Days?

Louis M. Says:

My wife and I are looking for exit plans out of the U.S. and are considering Belize as a new home. We want to come for 20+ days in late April, early May to explore the country and are considering the Ambergris Cay area. Do you have any suggestions about where we can find appropriate lodging?

IL Belize Correspondent Shane Kenny Says:

Hi Louis,

Happy to hear you’re considering Belize as your overseas escape. This little Central American nation casts a spell—especially on those with a spirit of adventure. It also offers a lifestyle that’s relaxed, gentle… and affordable.

Finding discounted lodging for a 20-day stay may be challenging, but not impossible. Here in Belize most lodging is done nightly, monthly, or annually. Your best option would be to find an AirBnb style property and contact the owners about long-term discounts.

A few things to consider:

  • Late April to early May is still considered “high season” here in Belize so your options may be limited and owners may be less willing to work with you. If you can move your trip to be all in May or September / October you may find owners more inclined to work with you.
  • Being on, or near, the beach will be the most expensive option for lodging. If you’re willing to be a few minutes’ walk from the beach or “town center,” it may lower the rates you will pay.
  • Even longer-term rentals are subject to the 9% hotel tax, which is not usually included in quoted prices.

While I can’t help with specific places to try on Ambergris Caye, you could check out these places in Placencia if you’re not 100% set on your location:

  • Casa Placencia was started by a local expat, Jacki Tipton back in the 1990s. It offers 1- and 2-bed apartments for weekly and longer visits. The garden apartments in particular are reasonably priced.
  • Casa Palma has apartments for rent by the beach and a guesthouse close to the main road in Placencia. You can get a 20% discount by signing up to the mailing list on the website.
