Where Should We Rent for 2 Months in the Algarve?

Doris S. Says:

I am looking to rent a 2-bedroom apartment in the Algarve for February and March, 2024. I love tennis and my husband golfs. What should I know before renting and who should I contact to rent?

Hi Doris,

Great choice to spend two months visiting the Algarve. It’s always a good idea to test drive a location like this to see if you like living there before making a more permanent decision.

I would say, it’s important to decide where in the Algarve you would like to rent. The region features seven of the top 10 Portuguese beaches, if you’re into beach life. In addition to the coastal area, there is a swath of hilly terrain that traverses the length of the seaside all the way across this lower region of the country. This is also part of the Algarve, and has a more permanent, residential feel to it, contrasted with the resort feel of the coastal towns. It also attracts many who prefer sunny weather, but also a more tranquil feel in everyday living.

You mention your husband likes to golf. The highest concentration of golf courses can be found in the central Algarve. In particular, Vilamoura was developed in the 1980s as an elite golfing center, today the town is a stylish and sophisticated resort.

Just a few blocks from Vilamoura is Quarteira, what used to be a fishing village dating from pre-Roman times. A little farther inland, several world-class golf and tennis clubs provide a playground for not only the rich and famous, but average folks seeking a fun vacation or retirement in an ideal spot. The cost of living is a little higher than in some other parts of Portugal, but you do get First-World restaurants and the feel of a truly international beach scene.

As for renting tips: The rental market is divided into short-term (including vacation rentals) and long-term. Short-term is less than 12 months, and sounds like what you’re looking for.

One thing to keep in mind is that vacation rentals are often pricey compared to what a long-term monthly rental fee would be. You’re planning to rent in what would be the Algarve’s less-pricey season, which will help.

The Algarve region has many vacation properties that are offered out of season for extended stays of several months at very competitive prices, although you will need to vacate when high season begins in summer. Popular websites like Airbnb and Booking.com remain your best option for finding these kinds of monthly rentals. You can negotiate monthly discounts when booking.
