Will French Customs Tax My Jewelry?

Cynthia S. Says:

I’m considering moving to the south of France. When I go through French customs, are they going to tax my jewelry? I have a lot of it.

IL France Correspondent Tuula Rampont Says:

Hello Cynthia, thank you for your question.

Currently, there’s no tax on valuables, like jewelry, if you’re planning on bringing those items to France. There is an obligation to declare cash, securities, and valuables over a certain amount to French customs.

In this case, if your valuables are equal, or greater to, the sum of €10,000—currently around $10,500—you would have to make a declaration to the authorities.

It requires filling out a form that you can download before you leave for France, known as the cerfa form 13426, which you can access on the French customs website in English.

You can give the form directly to the customs authorities when you arrive in France, or you can fill it out online and submit it no sooner than 30 days before entering the country.

Best wishes on your journey to France!
